Stan's comments on resolutions

>Re: VVPT: Let me suggest that while a replay of our '04 VVPT resolution (PPC) might have some merit as a 'reminder', the issue is well imbedded in the State Platform and just needs to be "defended" to remain there; prior resolutions do not "expire", unless replaced by corresponding amended resolutions on the same issue. I would submit that any VVPT resolution should now focus on specific legal action against the Secretary of State for failure to provie a verifiable ballot; further, there now emerges an even more problematic Republican initiative: Voter ID's and indescriminate purging of voter rolls in counties across The State; these would be excellent matters for resolutions. Hi, Stan,
Good point. We did succeed last year at the state Dem. convention on the verifiable voting resolution and getting it into the platform. The HAVA, protection from election fraud, and voters' rights resolutions could use your suggestions. (We need to work on them anyway, probably to combine them into one resolution and eliminate duplication. Two of them were written after the conventions last year and were not in the original batch, but they have good ideas, too.) Your ideas will also be helpful in developing a questionnaire (based on our resolutions) for candidates.
However, we still need to build up more support for voting reform. Resolutions (in my opinion) are not just something we want to get passed in the conventions and incorporated in the party platform. They are also an education and organizing tool -- they inform voters about issues, they help us identify voters who agree with us so we know who to encourage to attend precinct conventions, and they give those folks a reason to attend the conventions (so they can support other things, such as voting for progressives on the SDEC). They can give us something specific to question candidates about (would you support this resolution) and which we can hold them to after the elections.
Also, when you reply to the discussion list about a topic posted there, and since you use digest mode, it helps a lot to do the following:
When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific
than "Re: Contents of Discuss digest..."
When replying to this digest, please delete the text of all messages EXCEPT the one you're replying to, and change the subject to reflect the subject of that individual message.
That's why the list server intercepted your reply (due to the length with all the multiple messages in it).
Thanks--
Bill
