Feb 12 2006 - 5:30pm
Feb 12 2006 - 9:00pm

Event Description:

Come to the Houston Social Forum Potluck Dinner and Movie 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 12, at the Artery, 5401 Jackson at Prospect (entrance on Prospect). Visit with Heather Smith and Jennifer Rooks, two young activists who recently returned from Caracas, Venezuela, where they attended the World Social Forum.  Let their enthusiasm activate the latent activism in you.

Corral your friends, your creative spirit, a favorite yummy and wholesome pot luck dish and bring your vision of "Another World," which would stand in stark, positive contrast to what we live now.

A short cameo musical performance by Houston poet/singer/songwriter Barton "kingbaby" Boyce willl kick off the event at 5:30 p.m. We will meet, eat and confab from 5:30-7 p.m. The movie (generously provided by the Houston Institute for Culture) will screen at 7 p.m. and is described as follows:

* ARGENTINA - HOPE IN HARD TIMES, 74 min.  http://www.bullfrogfilms.com/catalog/arg.html  What would you do if you lost your job, they closed the banks so you  couldn't access your savings, and the government seemed unable to  help? In Argentina they stormed supermarkets for food; the police  gunned down 30 people in just one day. But what happened next was  truly extraordinary. The film joins in the processions and protests,  attends street-corner neighborhood assemblies, visits workers'  cooperatives and urban gardens, taking a close-up look at the ways in  which Argentines are picking up the pieces of their devastated  economy and creating new possibilities for the future.

The Houston Social Forum is a regional event planned for April 29-30, 2006. The Forum is designed to address local as well as global issues.  It is comprised of diverse groups and individuals building from common values. It is nongovernmental and nonpartisan but actively supportive of true participatory democracy,  nonviolent resistance to world injustice and mechanisms that value people over profit. HSF seeks active participation from groups and individuals alike who share these values and concerns.
