Event Description:

Join Citizens League for Environmental Action Now (CLEAN), Galveston-Houston Association for Smog Prevention (GHASP), Mothers for Clean Air, Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services (TEJAS), Pleasantville Environmental Coalition and concerned citizens as we hold a candlelight vigil for clean air to raise awareness about Houston's air quality problems.

The Candlelight vigil is also to encourage participation in a public hearing on EPA’s proposed rule on National Emissions Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants (NESHAP) from Petroleum Refineries the following day at the Hartman Park Community Center.

Background:
Houston’s air quality is unhealthy and has not met the standards set by the Clean Air Act in nearly three decades. Much of the city’s air pollution problem is due to its proximity to the ship channel industries which compose the largest petrochemical complex in the nation- comprising over 60 percent of the country’s petrochemical industry. Furthermore, Harris County ranks among the worst in the nation for air emissions of chemicals that cause cancer.
