[PAA-Webteam] New e-mail lists and auto-responder

Submitted by PAAMember on September 19, 2005 - 1:00am. ::

Our new e-mail lists are all operational.

Sunday night, I sent a message to everyone on the old announcements
list, and to those who for some reason were on the discussion list
but not on the announcements list, to tell them about the change.
All of you should have received that message.

I moved over all the people on the old discussion list to the new
one, and set the ones who wanted digest mode on the old list to the
same on the new one.

I moved over all the people on the old announcements list to the new
one, but left everyone set for standard (non-digest) mode on the new
one. There's no reason for someone to select digest mode on the new
list, since we don't send out multiple messages in a single day.
Anyone who wants to set digest mode on that list can do so, but the
only thing it will accomplish is delaying their getting announcements
until the end of the day when the digest is sent out.

I set everyone on both of the old lists to moderated, so no messages
will go through on the old lists unless we approve them (please
don't). I also set an auto-responder message for the old lists.
However, I don't think it's working. It worked for me when I sent a
message to the old list before I moderated everyone (including
myself). However, after I set myself to be moderated and sent out
another test message, it was intercepted (as it should be), but I
only got a standard message saying my post was being held for
approval by the moderator, instead of the custom auto-responder text
which told people the new list address to use.

So, Charlie (and whoever else among you can help with this), when we
get an note from the old list saying someone's trying to post
something, we need to send them the message I sent out telling them
to please send it instead to the new list at
(unless we can get the auto-responder to work while everyone is
moderated too).

I also disabled cross-posting of mail from all the new lists to the
forums, until we can fix the problem of e-mail addresses getting
posted to the forum where everyone (including spammers) can get them.

We may get some messages saying people are being removed from the new
lists (especially the discussion list) due to excessive bounces, as I
moved over everyone from the old list to the new one (unless I knew
their address was bad). The old list server for the discussion list
didn't remove people from the list if their mail repeatedly bounced,
and there's no way to tell (for those set for no mail) whether it was
due to bouncing or because someone set themselves to nomail.

Charlie or Sarah, can we put a prominent link from the home page of
our old web site to the new one, as we had until about 10 days ago,
to make it easier for everyone to find it?

Thanks again to Sarah and Charlie for working so hard on the e-mail
lists and forums, and thanks to the rest of you for your help,
suggestions, and comments, too!
