[PAA-Webteam] Getting list of current e-mail list subscribers

Submitted by PAAMember on September 19, 2005 - 5:01pm. ::

Charles M, Heather, Tami, and Margaret,

If you want to get a current list of who's on your e-mail list,
here's what to do. (This only works if you are a moderator or
administrator for this list and know the admin or moderator password
for that list, so call me if you don't have the moderator password
for your list):

Send an email to the -request address for your list. For example:
impeach-request-paa-tx.org
hsf-request-paa-tx.org
mil_recruiting-request-paa-tx.org

In the body of the e-mail, put the following command:
who xxx
end

(Replace "xxx" with the password for your list, and don't put any
other text in the body of the email before the "who" command.)

The list server will send a list of subscribers back to you.

This won't tell you if some of the e-mails on the list are bad and
mail is bouncing, but at least you can see who the list server is
trying to send mail to. If you know of other people who you think
would like to join the list (or have corrected e-mail addresses for
them), send them an e-mail and tell them to go to the listinfo
address for the list(s) they're interested in. For example:
http://paa-tx.org/mailman/listinfo/impeach_paa-tx.org
http://paa-tx.org/mailman/listinfo/hsf_paa-tx.org
http://paa-tx.org/mailman/listinfo/mil_recruiting_paa-tx.org

There are already a bunch of people on the impeach list. I sent out
invitations this afternoon to people I knew who are likely to be
interested in the mil_recruiting list, the HSF list, and the
election_reform list, but those people won't be added until after
they confirm the invitation that the list server sends to them.

When I or someone else gets some time, we can send out an invitation
to people we know who may be interested in the other lists. Some
people may join them in response to the e-mail I sent last night to
the PAA Announcements list, but we're more likely to get people to
join the list by sending them an invitation that's specific to a
particular list.

If you want, you may also refer potential list members to
http://paa-tx.org/mailman/listinfo where they can see the names of
all our new lists. Clicking on the links for any of them will take
you to the listinfo page for that list, where you can read more
details and subscribe if you wish.

Bill

Bill,
I had just copied and pasted from the email you sent which was
as copied and pasted below from your email. I should have recognized that
it needed an @ somewhere but overlooked it.

Send an email to the -request address for your list.  For
example:
   impeach-request-paa-tx.org

hsf-request-paa-tx.org

mil_recruiting-request-paa-tx.org

Bill:
I tried to send an email to impeach-request-paa-tx.org (presumably with no
subject so I left that line blank) and    who xxxxxxxxx (my
password) in the body, I got this message:

The following problems occurred while processing your request:

impeach-request-paa-tx.org - This address is too long.  Addresses are
a maximum of 16 characters.

Your mail has not been sent.  Please correct the problems listed and
try again.

On the topic of privacy of the EMAIL lists: I'd like to suggest
that we add one more layer to the current admin pages (HTML) - an
admin mailing list for each of the lists.

This 'cuz I just noticed the following on the bottom of each
of the mailman pages:

HSF list run by paatx at paa-tx.org, slindahl at rounder-graphics.com,
clindahl at gte.net, paa at crosierbiomed.com, heatherelizabethsmith at
yahoo.com

This stuff can be harvested by spambots in a nano-second.

I'd suggest we setup mailing lists (what are our limits
with the ISP) to be

HSF list run by

That address can be "harvested" too, but at least the individual
admin addresses can't be easily spambotted.

we don't have enough mailing lists to do this. We are limited on our
account to a specific # of lists.

Charles - other than that, I am TOTALLY missing your point about
having admin mailing lists for each list. huh? why?
thx,

Yeah, I know these are at the bottom of all the Mailman pages,
including the public ones. Do you think the spambots are smart
enough to look for "at" as opposed to "@" ? If so, then I see what
you mean.

If you think we should do this, then go ahead. I guess it's better
to be safe. I guess it may need to be a separate admin list for each
of our Mailman lists, though. That's a lot of lists. Maybe an
alternative would be for those of us who are admins to set up
disposable e-mail accounts (on yahoo or hotmail, for example) that we
use only for this, and then if we start getting spammed we can switch
addresses. Would this be easier?
