To be held in front of Houston City Hall.

The goal of this rally is not to advocate for one particular solution to this complex issue, but to raise this issue to the moral consciousness of our society. We believe that the wealthiest nation in the world, which often speaks of "values", has a moral obligation to find a way to erase this great and obvious divide between the rich and the poor, the haves and the have-nots. We are also going to voice our opposition to the proposed Medicaid cuts, which will leave many Katrina survivors and other Americans without insurance.

Harris County AFL-CIO Council, December 10th International Human Rights Day - STREET HEAT Day of Action to Restore Workers’ Freedom to Form Unions and Bargain Collectively

  • Transport Workers Union of America (TWU), Local 582
  • TWU’s School Bus Drivers in Cy-Fair ISD and Humble ISD

Let’s Stand with these Workers!

Continental Airlines’ Fleet Service Workers and the Bus Drivers of Cy-Fair and Humble ISD want a Union.  The Transportation Workers Union and these Workers need our support.

December 10th is International Human Rights Day and is our National Day of Action to Restore Workers’ Freedom to Form Unions and Bargain Collectively.  Our Houston event in support of TWU will be just one of many events held across the country by workers and their Unions.  The Employee Free Choice Act that is now before Congress will protect workers who want to form a union and bargain a contract with their employer.  Unfortunately, under our present labor laws 25% of workers are fired for doing so or threatened with a plant closing and 1/3 never achieve first contact.

We need to turn out on Saturday, December 10th (you will be voting in the run-off on that same day) at 10:00 a.m. at the Mickey Leland Federal Bldg, 1919 Smith St., Downtown Houston, Wear your Union colors and bring your Union banners.  Show your support for workers.

Throw a House Party for the State of the Union Address

Does the thought of watching President Bush give the State of the Union address (scheduled for January 31) leave you feeling a bit depressed? We have the solution: Throw a house party to support UFPJ and your local peace and justice group. And have fun!

To support your efforts in hosting a house party, we have prepared a "Parties for Peace & Justice" kit, with instructions and a timeline for throwing a house party, a sample invitation, RSVP form and other support materials. We also have ideas for games and talking points to use for Bush's State of the Union Address, including a "Track the Lies" tally sheet. Visit the merchandise section of our website today to order stickers, posters, yard signs, and other party favors!

Event Description:

Sojourners is encouraging people throughout the US to organize or attend speech-watching parties and discussions:

Organizing or attending a State of our Values watch is an easy and fun way to build community, discuss President Bush's speech with fellow people of faith, and contribute our voices to the national dialogue about whether our values and priorities as a nation are being met. Imagine this: With your passion and energy, we will organize hundreds of State of our Values watches in churches and communities of faith across the country. Think of the media story: "People of faith react to the State of the Union: News at 11." It's time to raise our prophetic voices together!

Never done anything like this before? We've put together a comprehensive tool kit that will help you through this process step by step. Organizers will also be able to participate in conference calls with Sojourners and Call to Renewal staff, as well as fellow organizers, to compare notes and ideas. Putting together a successful State of Our Values watch will be a rewarding, empowering, and fun experience.

To host a speech-watching party in your home, church, or other location, or to find one that's already planned near you.

Building a majority, issue by issue", The Billie Carr Institute

Featured presentations and discussions

  • Voter surveys: Drs. Bob Stein, Stephen Klineberg, Richard Murray
  • Discussion panels about environmental and education issues
  • Candidates Bob Gammage (Gov.) and Nick Lampson (US House) & more

Targeted to activists, political club members and those newly involved in the political process, this workshop focuses on quality of life issues such as environment and education which are important to Democratic and independent voters in suburban and urban area campaigns.

To win elections in our region, Democrats need to communicate about issues important to Democrats as well as a segment of "independent" voters. We can't just shout at George W. Bush and complain about Tom DeLay, we need to speak intelligently about issues that a majority of voters care about.  That is what this conference is all about.

This event features briefings from the top survey research experts in the Houston region, discussions about key quality of life issues, and a special time for activists and volunteers to meet candidates.

Let's party!  Let's tell the world that change is in the air!  Let's make signs!

We're having a sign making party, before the First Amendment is taken away, for those needing a sign for the March 18 demonstration or for freeway blogging, or for anything else for which you need a political sign.

Where:

Houston 77061
713-305-5346
just northwest of Hobby airport
map: http://tinyurl.com/4f6xq

When:
Sat. Mar. 11, 2-6 pm

Bring any of this if you have it, but don't go out and buy any:
*Dark paint (latex only, please -- alkyd or oil-based paint takes too long to dry)
*LARGE cardboard, old sheets, old political yard signs, or anything large, lightweight, & paintable
*1.5 - 3" Paint brushes (we already have some, including larger ones and rollers)
*Something to share for dinner if you want to stay afterwards (or money for something to be delivered)

To find large pieces of cardboard, go by your favorite dumpster or call a nearby appliance store to ask when is a good time to get large boxes when their trucks return from delivery.
Fold the cardboard parallel to the corrugations if needed, to fit into your car.
We can duct tape smaller cardboard pieces together.
Old sheets make great signs/banners, too, and hold up if it rains better than cardboard.

Be sure to wear clothes and shoes that are OK to get paint on.  We have several old T-shirts you can borrow.

The Freeway Blogger web site http://www.freewayblogger.com/ has lots of great examples, with photos of some of the hundreds and hundreds of signs that have been placed on freeway overpasses and other visible locations in all 50 states.

The simple procedure: http://www.freewayblogger.com/howto.htm

Everyone is invited to help us make signs, so feel free to forward this to others who may believe in the 1st Amendment.

Start: 11:00 am
End: 3:00 pm

Event Description:

Join us for an international day of solidarity and make the 3rd anniversary of the criminal war & occupation of Iraq the last one.

BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW!

From New Orleans to Baghdad

STOP the War Abroad and HERE at HOME!

Money for jobs, health care, housing, schools and veterans benefits – NOT WAR!

Build levees, not bombs
Support the struggle of Katrina evacuees
Stop the illegal surveillance
Overturn the USA PATRIOT Act

NO CUTS IN VA FUNDING
NO WAR FOR OIL & EMPIRE

Hands off Iran & Venezuela
End all colonial occupations - From Iraq & Afghanistan to Palestine & Haiti
From Latin America & the Caribbean, to Africa, Asia & the Middle East – no more interventions

Please bring signs to remind the public about the thousands in the US military (as well as Iraqis) who have been severely wounded, disabled, and who need ongoing help, but who the US government is ignoring.

We want to support the VA Hospital and bring attention to how US funding of the occupation of Iraq is causing tremendous grief to both US and Iraqi families, and demonstrate the hypocrisy of a government that claims to be supporting the troops and hurricane survivors, while it spends money instead on death and destruction.

Keep the Heat in the Street!

Let us unite with Texas activists who are protesting in Austin, Dallas, Denton, San Antonio, and Galveston!

Protests are happening around the world!  See http://answercoalition.org/ and http://unitedforpeace.org/

Houston Actions on Saturday, March 18:

11 AM – Demonstration & Leafleting at the VA Hospital, corner of OST and Almeda Rd.

1 PM – Rally 1/2 mile north of demonstration, at the southeast corner of Hermann Park, corner of Holcombe Blvd. and Almeda Rd.
Performances by local musicians and poets, open mic for our youth to voice their ideas on "Taking Back Our Future"

Parking is available near the rally location, and it's a short walk down to the demonstration.  The Almeda Rd. entrance to the VA medical center may not be open on the weekend.

3 Years in Iraq

CANDLELIGHT VIGIL FOR PEACE

March 21 Dunlavy Bridge 6:30P

This week begins the fourth year of the criminal war and occupation of Iraq. The consequences have been enormous. Deaths for U.S. service people now number 2,311. Officially, over 17,000 more U.S. service people have been reported wounded — unofficial estimates are between 18,000 to 48,000 wounded. The number of Iraqi civilian deaths are reported at over 33,000 with an average of 36 people per day. An additional $92 billion dollars of more U.S. taxpayer money is slated to pass approval this week for a new total of $400 billion dollars being spent, there is no end in sight. The Senate has now permitted the national debt to grow to $9 trillion. And the war has brought new assaults on civil liberties and democratic rights.

Immigrant Issues: A Fighting Back! Workshop

This is the first in a series of issues forums planned for this election year. All candidates and Democratic activists are invited to attend. It is evident from the early tactics being used by the Repubs that beating up on immigrants is to be a theme of this election cycle. We have to be ready to talk back on this difficult issue. On April 8th we will host a workshop on framing the Immigration message to get ready for them.

The purpose of this workshop is to develop a common value frame about immigration. It is NOT about creating the 5 robotic talking points. Please attend . Hopefully you will be informed and empowered to spread the good word that Democratic values can effectively address this thorny problem.

Save this Mother's Day for our annual Peace Wants a Piece of the Pie. We will visit our congressional representatives bearing pies and requesting they fund the cabinet level Department of Peace with a small piece of the funding pie (federal budget).

On May 12th, tell Congress that PEACE wants a PIECE of the PIE!  Ask your U.S. Representatives to support HR 3760 and Senators to support S1756 to establish a cabinet-level Dept of Peace to begin focusing on proven effective programs that reduce violence.   Join us on May 12th (the Friday before Mother's Day), with pie in hand and/or Mother's Day cards and come to the Mickey Leland Building, 1919 Smith St., front entrance on Friday at 11 AM.  We are expecting press coverage, so we need a good turnout.  And also call your  Members of Congress on Friday and ask for 1% of the U.S. budget to create a Department that will research, articulate and facilitate nonviolent solutions to domestic and international causes of violence.  Call Senators in D.C.  Switchboard: (202) 224-3121 or http://www.congress.org for Representative's local numbers. Ask them to put a focus on reducing violence by cosponsoring HR 3760 or S1756 to establish a Dept of Peace.

Government Officials and Local Imams Together in a Dialogue

The Imam Roundtable is an inaugural attempt to bring together Muslim religious leaders [imams] with federal and local government officials in order to facilitate a dialogue.  Imams are in a special position in the community of devout Muslims given their significant role not only in religious functions but also many times as the source for guidance on non-religious issues.  By creating an environment for a productive, honest and candid discussion, the various stakeholders at the Roundtable will better understand each other.  This understanding is an essential step to further the development of relationships which will aid both parties in addressing the issues impacting the Muslim-American community.

Event Description:

Compassionate Communication is a language that serves life and which is being practically applied in educational institutions, business and industry, social service agencies and politically charged situations, as well as in families and personal relationships – all around the world.

Compassionate Communication (CC) is a way of interacting that facilitates the flow of communication needed to exchange information and resolve differences peacefully.

  • CC focuses on shared human values and needs, and encourages the use of language that increases goodwill and avoidance of language that contributes to resentment or lowered self-esteem.
  • CC assumes that enriching life is the most satisfying motivation for doing things, rather than being motivated by fear, guilt, blame, or shame.
  • CC emphasizes taking personal responsibility for choices and improving the quality of relationships as a primary goal.
  • CC  is effective even when other people involved are not familiar with the process.

To read more about Compassionate Communication or to obtain the book Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Compassion by Marshall B. Rosenberg, PhD.

Brenda Hardt, a board member of Decade of Nonviolence-Houston and the Peace With Justice Coordinator of The United Methodist Church, will give a brief introduction to this process  based on identifying universally shared standards and needs.
